School of Theatre and Film Application Requirements
BA in Film: Film and Media Production Concentration
The BA in Film is offered jointly through the Herberger College School of Theatre and Film and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. If you are interested in pursuing a concentration in film and media production, please follow the steps below. If you are interested in pursuing a concentration in film and media studies, please refer to information provided by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- Apply to ASU. You will apply to ASU as a BA film (film and media production) pre-major.
- Complete 18 semester hours of required core film courses. You must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. You will apply to for formal admission to the BA Film (film and media production concentration) during the semester in which you are completing the 18 semester hour core.
Required core classes:
FMS 100 - Introduction to Film (3 credits) (CLAS)
FMS 200 - Film History (3 credits) (CLAS)
FMS 270 - Race and Ethnicity in American Film (3 credits) (CLAS)
FMP 201 - Film: The Creative Process I: Production Survey (3 credits) (HCA)
THP 261 - Introduction to Screenwriting (3 credits) (HCA)
FMP 250 - Sex & Violence in Film & TV: Ethics Survey (3 credits) (HCA)
- Complete School of Theatre and Film application materials. Apply to the film and media production concentration during the semester in which you are completing the 18 semester hour core film courses. Applicants to the film and media production concentration must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the core classes.
Application Deadlines: Sept. 26, 2008 for an October 2008 interview
Feb. 27, 2009 for a March 2009 interview
- Complete the School of Theatre and Film application form.
- Submit a three-page, double-spaced essay. The essay should answer the question: Why do you want to study Film and Media Production and how will their study further your own goals?
- Submit a critical essay. The essay should be a critical response to a film you have seen. The essay should be no more than two pages, double-spaced and not simply a summary.
- Submit letters of reference. At least one and no more than three letters of reference from a teacher or someone with whom you have had professional and/or artistic interaction. Do not submit letters from relatives or close friends. These letters may be mailed directly to the Herberger College (address below) or included with your application materials.
- Submit one from among the following:
- Original screenplay. The screenplay may be any length.
- Original video. The video should be no more than 10 minutes in length and on DVD (preferred) or VHS.
- Send application materials to the Herberger College of the Arts. Application materials must be received by Sept. 26, 2008 for the October interviews and Feb. 27, 2009 for the March interviews.

- Interview with faculty. The audition/portfolio review dates for admitted freshman and transfer students are as follows:
Oct. 23-25, 2008 (application deadline: Sept. 26, 2008)
March 26-28, 2009 (application deadline: Feb. 27, 2009)
The Herberger College will schedule the specific date and time for your interview and notify you once your date and time has been scheduled once all other application materials have been received.
Transfers who are eligible to apply to the film program who are unable to travel to the Tempe campus in October 2008 or March 2009 can be admitted into the pre-major program and interview in October 2009 for formal admission to the major.

The admissions committee will be made up of a cross-disciplinary group of theatre/film faculty appointed on staggered terms. The committee will provide you with oral feedback on the material submitted for admission.
