Productions

MainStage Production Manual:Auditions/Casting

Auditions are open to the entire ASU community; e.g., students, faculty, and staff.  Casting beyond the ASU community may be done to enhance the learning experience of theatre students.  Such casting must be approved in advance by the School of Theatre and Film Artistic Director.

The Director / Artistic Director and Director of a production may pre-cast selected roles for pedagogic reasons. Such pre-casting must be approved by the Director in advance and will be announced at the time of auditions.

All Actors will be required to sign a Memo of Understanding (see MEMO OF UNDERSTANDING) which describes the Actor’s obligation to the production, including inclusive dates, and exclusive availability.

All Actors must have a minimum 2.5 GPA at the time of audition, and must maintain that minimum GPA throughout the duration of the production.  Theatre majors must have and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in all majors-only Theatre classes.  Any student not meeting these minimums shall not be cast until their GPA improves.

The School of Theatre and Film Director and the academic advisor must approve all potential cast lists before they may be posted.  A student may work on more than one Mainstage production each semester in design or crew capacities, but is discouraged from acting in more than one Mainstage production per semester for scheduling reasons.

The School of Theatre and Film is committed to promoting diversity in the casting of roles where race, ethnicity, gender, age, and the presence or absence of a disability is not absolutely essential to the development of the play or character.

Combined MainStage Auditions
The School of Theatre and Film shall attempt to hold Mainstage auditions three times a year: in the late spring for the first productions of the next fall, in the early fall for the late fall productions, and late fall for all spring productions.  This means that, at any given audition, you may be auditioning for more than one production at a time.  These may be combined, with all Directors in the same room at the same time, or they may be simultaneous and separate, with auditions for each Director separately.

Audition schedules may be altered to accommodate guest artists’ travel schedules.

Student Production Board/ Prism Theatre
Student Production Board adheres to the same minimum requirements for casting that the School of Theatre and Film as a whole does; that is, a minimum 2.5 GPA and no conflicts within the fourteen (14) days prior to, and including, the opening performance.  Student Production Board audition notices shall be posted separately from Mainstage notices as needed.

Conflicts
On the School of Theatre and Film’s Audition Form, there is a schedule grid on which you should note all conflicts - ongoing (like work and class schedule) and one-time (like a wedding).  The Director will assess the conflicts listed, and if you are cast, those are the only conflicts that will be excused.  If unavoidable conflicts arise after you are cast, notify the Director and Stage Manager immediately.  Conflicts announced after casting may affect your ability to stay in the production, in any position - cast or crew.

Distribution
The School of Theatre and Film Director and the Academic Advisor must approve audition notices before posting or announcing any casting.  Once approved, audition notices are posted on the Callboard in the FAC lobby.  There are separate spaces available for Mainstage and non-Mainstage casting notices.
